Angkor Wat is an architectural masterpiece. It's been described as more impressive than the Pyramids, and as distinctive as the Taj Mahal. It was built in the early 12th century and is one of the most intact buildings in the Angkor group.

  • What many people don't realize is that the name "Angkor Wat" only refers to one building complex among many. The greater Angkor group covers 77 square miles...This amazing building is one of many found in the Ta Prohm temple complex... an area known for the huge trees that have partially destroyed, and partially kept together the buildings. This particular area has been left relatively untouched by archaeologists, allowing visitors to feel a little of what the 19th century explorers must have felt when they (re) discovered it.

  • On an excursion in a very remote part of Northeast Cambodia, I was brought to a local village where I met this man. He had a charming way about him and seemed genuinely happy to meet foreigners. I was told by my guide that he was the local witch doctor. Initially, I was a little disappointed by this because I always pictured witch doctors to have boiled monkeys, shrunken heads, eye of newt, and snakes all around. Later, the guide told me that the life expectancy in that particular village was only 27... I was now quite impressed with the witch doctor.

  • The artwork at Angkor has the influence of two major religions, Buddhism and Hinduism. Here, like in India, it's nice to see two very tolerant religions live side by side without conflict. It's a peaceful message that many of the world's other religions should take heed from.
